Zamfara disburses N33.6bn World Bank empowerment fund
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, on Tuesday, disbursed N75,000 each to 448,141 residents of the state, amounting to a total of N33.6 billion, under a World Bank-funded Conditional Cash Transfer initiative aimed at financial empowerment.
The disbursement, carried out via debit cards, was formally flagged off at a ceremony held at the Tsafe Local Government Secretariat.
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, quoted Lawal as urging beneficiaries to invest the funds in small-scale enterprises to foster economic self-reliance and reduce poverty.
“It is with great pleasure that I stand before you to flag off this programme, which is designed to provide financial support of N75,000 to each of the 448,141 beneficiaries,” the governor said.
He explained that 279,534 individuals had met the eligibility criteria and would receive the funds immediately, while the remaining beneficiaries would be paid as soon as the verification process was complete.
The initiative, Lawal said, targets the most vulnerable members of society with the goal of promoting grassroots entrepreneurship and reducing reliance on government aid.
“To the beneficiaries of this programme, I would like to remind and caution you not to use this intervention solely for domestic needs. This empowerment is meant to help you invest in your future, support your families, and contribute meaningfully to our local and national economy,” he added.
Governor Lawal expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, development partners, and stakeholders—particularly the National Cash Transfer Office—for their collaboration and support in implementing the programme.
“Let me take this opportunity to assure you that our administration remains committed to partnering with individuals and organisations dedicated to the development and progress of Zamfara State,” he said.
The governor then officially launched the distribution and activation of the debit cards for the Conditional Cash Transfer payments.
