1 Of 2024’s Best Animated Movies With 96% RT Score Is Coming to Netflix

A critically acclaimed Dreamworks Animation title lands a new streaming home following its wildly successful theatrical run. The animated sci-fi blockbuster, The Wild Robot, is on its way to Netflix later this spring.

Per Collider, The Wild Robot, helmed and written by Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon director Chris Sanders, will premiere via Netflix on May 24. Netflix is the latest streamer to pick up the Dreamworks film, having debuted on Peacock in January and been available to rent/purchase via Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. The animated title also became available on Blu-ray, 4K UHD and DVD earlier this year.

This famous fantasy trilogy is also getting a live-action remake.

Starring Oscar-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o in the titular role, The Wild Robot chronicles her character, Roz, an abandoned robot from tech company Universal Dynamics, who ends up on an uninhabited island in Oregon following a cargo ship crash caused by a storm. While on the island, she struggles to make friends and is branded a monster by its frightened wildlife. However, Roz tries to blend in with her new surroundings by building relationships with the wildlife and becoming the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose named Brightbill (Kit Connor). The star-studded film, based on Peter Brown’s 2016 book of the same name, also features the voices of Pedro Pascal, Ving Rhames, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Hsu and Mark Hamill.

Released last September, The Wild Robot became a smash hit, earning a 96% critical rating and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned $334 million worldwide against its $78 million budget, becoming the second-highest-grossing non-sequel in 2024. The film also earned three Academy Award nominations (including Best Animated Feature) and four Golden Globe nods, making it the most nominated animated movie ever at the Golden Globes. The Wild Robot also secured a Critics’ Choice Award win and several Annie Awards.

Terry Crews hopes the animated version of the sitcom will last just as long as The Simpsons.

Unsurprisingly, The Wild Robot‘s success prompted speculation about a potential sequel and that speculation was validated when Dreamworks confirmed last October that a follow-up is in development. Sanders was open to a sequel before The Wild Robot premiered, telling NBC Insider, “This was a labor of love on the part of everybody at the studio, and yes, I think I’d love to go and stay here for a while.” When asked if she would play the character of Roz again, Nyong’o said, “Oh, my goodness, yes. I mean, I love Roz. I love this project. It’s a good thing Peter Brown wrote three books! I would revisit her in a heartbeat.”

Dog Man Has Continued DreamWorks’ Success

DreamWorks built on The Wild Robot‘s momentum in 2025, thanks to Dog Man, a Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie spinoff, which garnered strong critical and commercial acclaim. The studio also produced a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, starring Mason Thames, Nico Parker and Gerard Butler. The adaptation, distributed by Universal Pictures, premiered at CinemaCon in April and will debut in theaters on Jun. 13.

The Wild Robot comes to Netflix on May 24.
