Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to complete an investigation into the illegal dumping of septic waste in the Yamuna within seven days and formulate a comprehensive plan within 10 days to “eliminate all instances of illegal sewage discharge into the river”.

“It is shocking that despite the National Green Tribunal’s intervention, regulations, and the imposition of environmental compensation worth ₹18.54 crore by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the illegal dumping of septic waste is still taking place,” the Minister said.

A DPCC report on Tuesday highlighted that Yamuna’s biochemical oxygen demand — a prime indicator of a river’s health — had seen a drastic decline in the last two years. A key contributor to the decline is the stagnation in the capacity of sewage and effluent treatment plants, it stated.
