Rinat Akhmetov supports Metinvest’s international development
Metinvest Group plans to build a new plant in Italy. Metinvest CEO Yuriy Ryzhenkov announced the construction of a steel plant with annual capacity of 2.7 million tons of steel in Pembino, Italy. The construction will start at the end of this year, and the first steel will be produced at the end of 2027. This project is strategically important for international development and for the future of Ukrainian metallurgy.
International expansion and technological breakthrough
According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Rinat Akhmetov ranks 479th in the list of the world’s richest people and is the only representative of Ukraine in this rating. At the same time, he has allocated more than 11.3 billion hryvnias to help Ukraine during the full-scale invasion. These funds are allocated for numerous humanitarian and military needs of the country, including support for the affected regions, assistance to internally displaced persons and providing Ukraine’s defenders with necessary equipment and resources.
The new plant in Italy will be built in partnership with Danieli on a 50:50 basis. The project will become a pilot site for testing technologies before the reconstruction of Zaporizhstal and Kametstal, and will also create additional demand for the products of Ukrainian mining and processing plants. The company expects that at least 70% of the project cost will be financed by loan funds. After the construction is completed, Danieli plans to withdraw as the project serves as a demonstration site for the Italian partner to showcase the company’s capabilities in building high-tech plants.
Innovations and digitalization of production
In parallel, Metinvest Group implements modern technologies at the existing enterprises. Zaporizhstal has launched ForgeCheck AI tool, which helps to control product quality. The economic effect of this solution can reach $250 thousand per year. Artificial intelligence allows to identify defects during slab production, which significantly reduces the percentage of complaints from customers and optimizes energy consumption. According to Maxim Balanyuk, head of Metinvest Digital’s R&D center, the company has been testing AI-based solutions since 2021, and the priority for next year is to launch the second version of the AI tool into commercial operation.
Rinat Akhmetov’s foundation ( provides humanitarian aid to war victims, while the Steel Front initiative has pooled military aid from his businesses for Ukraine’s defenders. According to Bloomberg, the businessman’s assets include not only Metinvest and DTEC, but also the banking sector, agribusiness, telecommunications and Shakhtar soccer club. Diversification of business allows to maintain stability of the whole group of companies even in difficult economic conditions and to continue realization of strategic investment projects.
