Amazon & Henry Cavill’s ‘Voltron’ Movie Will Reportedly Go Straight To Streaming

Former Man of Steel and The Witcher, Henry Cavill

, has several major projects in the works for Amazon. One such project is the live-action Voltron movie which, despite being something with major blockbuster potential, could suffer a somewhat unceremonious streaming fate.

No release date has yet been revealed for the Voltron adaptation, but the movie has amassed a star-studded cast for director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s sci-fi action outing. Despite all this, a new report (via GameRant) claims that Amazon is not planning to release Voltron in theaters, and will instead give the movie a straight-to-streaming release, much like Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman’s Road House remake last year.

Henry Cavill’s Long-Awaited ‘Highlander’ Reboot Is Closer Than Ever After Exciting Update

Speaking exclusively to MovieWeb, ‘John Wick’s Chad Stahelski confirmed some exciting news about his ‘Highlander’ reboot.

The insight claims that, with filming having wrapped last month, Amazon is now looking to release Voltron “straight to their Prime Video streaming service,” and thus go back on their previous “commitment to theatrical exhibition.” This is sure to be disappointing news for those who had hoped to watch Voltron battle evil on the big screen, with the studio no doubt hoping for another streaming success much like Road House before it, which became the most-watched Prime Video movie ever released.

The Voltron movie is expected to follow a similar plot to the animated series, which finds five teenagers suddenly transported from Earth and thrown into the middle of an intergalactic war. Taking control of five giant robotic lions, the group must work out a way to work together so they can unite and bring forth the mighty warrior known as Voltron.

The live-action adaptation brings together an all-star cast, including Henry Cavill, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, John Kim, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin. A live-action adaptation has been in the works since as far back as 2005 and, following several delays and setbacks, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber is now all set to helm the project, which will introduce “an entirely new generation of pilots.”

Voltron is just one of several projects that Henry Cavill has in the works under Amazon. The actor is all set to lead a reboot of the beloved sci-fi action franchise, Highlander, from John Wick director Chad Stahelski, and will headline the long-gestating adaptation of the hugely popular miniature wargame, Warhammer 40,000. Taking to social media previously, Cavill celebrated the news that the series is now officially going ahead, and teased what’s to come.

“My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world. Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts. Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though—more to come in time!”
