The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in music creation has seen a notable shift, with fewer artists employing AI tools in their creative processes compared to the previous year. This change comes even as AI-generated music continues to flood streaming platforms at an unprecedented rate.

A recent survey by global music distribution company Ditto Music reveals that 48% of artists have used AI in aspects of their music-making in 2024, a decline from nearly 60% in 2023. The applications of AI among these artists include songwriting, artwork creation, mastering, and general music production.

This decrease in AI adoption among musicians contrasts sharply with the growing presence of AI-generated content on streaming services. Deezer, a France-based music streaming platform, reports that over 20,000 AI-generated tracks are uploaded daily, accounting for approximately 18% of all new content on the platform.

The surge in AI-generated music has raised concerns within the industry. A report by the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) warns that generative AI could “cannibalize” up to 24% of music creators’ revenues by 2028.

In response to the influx of AI-generated content, streaming platforms are implementing measures to protect human artists. Deezer has introduced an AI detection tool designed to identify and filter fully AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations . Similarly, Universal Music Group has partnered with Deezer to prioritise professional artists over ambient or AI-generated noise content, aiming to redirect revenue towards human creators.

Despite the decline in AI usage among artists, some continue to explore its potential. A survey by Soundplate indicates that 20% of artists have used AI in their music production process, with an additional 10% planning to do so in the near future . These artists often employ AI to enhance workflow and creativity, rather than to replace human input entirely.

The evolving landscape of AI in music underscores the need for ongoing dialogue between artists, industry stakeholders, and technology developers to ensure that innovation supports, rather than undermines, human creativity.
