The Last Airbender’ Begins Filming Season 3
Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is alive and well, to say the least. As fans anxiously await the second season of the hit fantasy adaptation, the streaming giant is moving ahead with another batch of episodes sooner rather than later. Yes, not only has Netflix renewed Avatar: The Last Airbender for Season 3, but they have already started filming it.
Fresh off finishing production on Season 2, Netflix revealed that filming on Season 3 is now commencing for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The streamer released a video announcement with the cast celebrating the occasion, including recurring actors Gordon Cormier (Aang), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Miya Cech (Toph), Kiawentiio (Katara), Dallas Liu (Zuko), Elizabeth Yu (Azula), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Uncle Roh), and Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Azai). All of those names will be moving on to Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3, and they are indeed filming the next two seasons back-to-back to finish out the adaptation. It’s time to say goodbye to Season 1’s incredible OP.
Joining the cast in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 are Jon Jon Briones (Ratched, The Last Voyage of the Demeter) as Piandao and Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves, Killers of the Flower Moon) as Hama. Meanwhile, the second season will see a litany of newcomers to the crew, including Terry Chen (Jessica Jones) as Jeong Jeong, Dolly De Leon (Triangle of Sadness) as Lo and Li, Lily Gao (Twisted Metal) as Ursa, Madison Hu (Boogeyman) as Fei, and Dichen Lachman (Severance) as Yangchen. Executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani previously teased the plot of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, using a quote from the original series in the process.
“There’s no war in Ba Sing Se. For the Gaang, fans can expect more brilliant plans from Sokka, even more masterful bending from Katara, Appa, and Momo to be as fluffy as ever, and Aang to learn a new bending form (or two).”
Will ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 3 Be the Show’s Last Season?
As of this writing, Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 is meant to be the final chapter in Netflix’s fantasy saga. This coincides with the original animated show the adaptation is based on, which was also three seasons long. Netflix has had to change some plot points due to the limited time afforded in the eight-episode season of the live-action series, but that won’t stop them from keeping to the same season count. For better or worse, the Netflix adaptation is a leaner, meaner version of the original show, and that might not be for everyone.
Despite fans having some issues with the adaptation, it seems Netflix is keen on finishing what they started before hearing feedback on Season 2. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a beloved animated series that continues to grow with new projects on the way. While Netflix’s live-action adaptation has not garnered the same praise as its animated counterpart, other animated shows and films may instead fulfill that appetite. However, The Last Airbender has a chance to prove some audiences wrong, especially with the introduction of the fan-favorite character Toph next season.
