Sydney Sweeney Admits She Appeared in Her Worst-Reviewed Film of All Time to Impress Her Family
Award-winning actor Sydney Sweeney has one major stain on an otherwise solid Hollywood resume, thanks to the widely derided superhero film, Madame Web. Despite her Marvel debut not getting the results she’d hoped for, Sweeney admits she enjoyed being in the movie and appearing in it to please her family.
Speaking with Empire, Sweeney fondly recalled her time on Madame Web, claiming that, despite the film’s negative reputation, she liked working on the movie as it granted her significant exposure.
“It’s always fun to be able to be a part of something that’s bigger than yourself,” she said. “I hadn’t done a studio film yet, and I had started my production company [Fifty-Fifty Films]. I had some properties that I really wanted to be able to take out to studios, and I needed to be able to get my name to have more value, within a studio household.”

The Euphoria star also revealed she starred as Spider-Woman in Madame Web so her young cousins could see her perform. “I also wanted to be able to do something that my cousins can watch. I have a bunch of little teenage cousins, and they don’t really understand what I do,” Sweeney said. “I thought it would be so cool to be able to do something that they’d actually think was fun and cool.”

Unfortunately for Sweeney, Madame Web, the fourth film in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), flopped hard with critics and audiences, becoming the worst-rated movie of her career (11% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, Sweeney isn’t letting the negative reviews dampen her enthusiasm for the film. “I mean, I had a really fun time, so that is all that matters to me. I think that if you are enjoying what you do, it doesn’t really matter what the outcome is, on a box-office level. Of course, you want the film to be celebrated and loved and successful, because then everyone succeeds,” she said.
Madame Web Is the Biggest Lowlight of an Underwhelming SSU
Chronicling Dakota Johnson’s clairvoyant central character, Cassandra Webb, and her transition from a medic into the titular hero, Madame Web became the worst-reviewed movie of an SSU that’s yet to deliver a critical darling. Also starring Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced and Adam Scott, Madame Web barely made back its $100 million budget, leading to the cancelation of a planned sequel. However, the film found solace thanks to its streaming success on Netflix.
Sweeney has been open about why she agreed to make Madame Web. She previously admitted that it was a “strategic business decision,” as she jumped onboard to build relationships with Sony executives. Sweeney was also paid well for the film and has repeatedly expressed gratitude for her Marvel bow in interviews.
