R-Rated ‘Star Wars’ Film Pitched by ‘Deadpool’ Star Ryan Reynolds
As Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds contemplates his own X-Men team-up film, it appears the actor-writer is keen on taking his R-rated sensibilities to the Star Wars universe. Reynolds went directly to Disney and pitched a project set in the long-standing sci-fi franchise that would be R-rated. In a world in which Andor exists, perhaps Reynolds’ ideas are not too far off from a possible reality.
While on The Box Office podcast, Ryan Reynolds revealed that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars film to Disney. No, it was not a Deadpool-esque film with major Star Wars characters. Instead, it appears Reynolds wanted to do a mature, low-key story in a galaxy far, far away. It does not seem the idea much further than the pitching floor, but Reynolds makes a good case for why Disney should take the “gamble” on an R-rated project.
“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated “Star Wars” property? It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use. And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Reynolds then revealed that he would not star in the Star Wars project himself, as he found it would be a “bad fit” for the Deadpool actor. However, that doesn’t mean he would not write and produce in that sandbox, which could still contain some surprises if handled well.
“I’m not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit. I’d want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with ‘Star Wars’ because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”
While Reynolds is currently busy with his own projects, which reportedly include an X-Men team-up film featuring Deadpool, Star Wars has been flirting with the dark side of the franchise for quite some time. Sure, they have Star Wars: Starfighter from Shawn Levy on the way, as well as The Mandalorian & Grogu, but Andor proved there is a space in the franchise for mature storytelling. Although the Disney+ series was not officially mature-rated, it features by far the darkest and most violent moments in the entire saga. The Ghorman massacre alone is more emotionally charged and heartbreakingly violent than anything else in the Star Wars franchise.
The Perfect R-Rated ‘Star Wars’ Project Is Staring Right At Us
Disney+
Okay, perhaps Darth Vader has been overused in the Star Wars franchise at this point, but the iconic villain could still be the centerpiece of the first R-rated project. In fact, Osgood Perkins, who recently directed Longlegs and The Monkey, revealed that he was interested in directing a Vader-centric horror film. It would follow “the collected dreams and nightmares of Darth Vader told as short stories.”
Keeping Darth Vader as a distant, staggering evil that hunts down his enemies without fail would make for an incredible horror film told from the perspective of his victims. While Obi-Wan Kenobi focused on the man behind the mask, a Vader film could magnify his shadow to terrifying proportions. Of course, this is all wishful thinking and speculation. However, if the ending to Rogue One is any indication, then Darth Vader is ripe for a horror-centric, R-rated story.
