Audiences across South Africa are in for a spectacular cultural experience as a world-class orchestra production prepares to take the stage, blending classical movements with African storytelling. The event, featuring renowned local and international artists, promises to deliver deep, meaningful sonic and cultural connections.
A Homecoming for Artists
The production, hosted at the University of Pretoria’s Auditorium, includes celebrated performers such as Grammy-winning soprano Karen Slack and other acclaimed musicians. For many of the artists, this tour is a homecoming.
“I have performed in all these spaces—I walk on, I sing, they applaud,” shared one performer. “But when I come home, there’s ululation, cheering—I’m singing for my people, the community that supported me from the beginning.”
The concert will feature a mix of classical opera, African compositions, and spirituals, with a special focus on William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony—a piece rarely performed on the African continent. Dawson’s work tells the powerful story of African resilience through music, incorporating spirituals and traditional African rhythms.
Bridging Cultures Through Music
Karen Slack, a leading advocate for diversity in classical music, emphasized the importance of telling African stories through orchestral performances.
“There isn’t a lot of African opera yet, but it’s coming,” she said. “When I sing in Zulu or Xhosa abroad, audiences are fascinated. It’s important for us to share our stories so the world knows we exist.”
The program also includes works by Florence Price, one of the first prominent African-American female composers, as well as South African pieces like Plea for Africa.
A Transformative Musical Experience
Beyond entertainment, the concert aims to evoke deep emotions and cultural pride.
“Music is about message,” one artist explained. “Even if we haven’t lived the experiences we sing about, we embody the emotions to connect with the audience.”
For conductor and mentor figures involved, the tour is also about legacy. “If we can bring joy, enlightenment, or even help someone confront difficult emotions through music, then we’ve done our job,” said one of the event’s key organizers.
