Daniel boys soccer falls after midnight in SCHSL state championship
COLUMBIA — Fans didn’t leave until the next day.
There were two overtimes and three yellow cards handed out in a game that began at 9:13 p.m., and didn’t end until after midnight.
Unfortunately for Daniel boys soccer, they came up short on the long night.
The Lions (21-6) fell to Bishop England 2-1 in the Class AAAA state championship on May 24-25 at Memorial Stadium.
”These guys fought everyday in practice and worked really hard,” Daniel athletic director Ben Touchberry said after the loss to the Battling Bishops (18-5). “Even though the outcome is not what we wanted, we’re super proud of these guys. It’s a special night regardless of the score.
Daniel coach Thomas Izaguirre declined to comment.
The game was physical. Lions senior striker Wilkenson Petersen was issued two yellow cards and had to sit out by the second overtime. A Daniel assistant was issued one as well.
”We’re not going to make any excuses about calls,” Petersen said. “It was a physical game, but it was also an enjoyable game. Both teams had a competitive spirit, and we were just on the bad end of the stick tonight.”
Senior midfielder Luka Gasic scored the Lions’ goal in the first half.
Daniel had won three consecutive state championships, including last year’s 1-0 victory over Waccamaw. Touchberry said he’s confident the Lions have more championships ahead.
”They just have to continue to build,” he said. “Coach Thomas does a great job of building this program. They already have a good foundation, so some of these younger guys coming will get the chance to see what success looks like.”
