Wouldn’t say he’d be prolific

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Former Wrexham striker Sam Dalby’s ability to mix it in League One has been questioned after reports emerged linking the forward to Wigan Athletic.

The 25-year-old netted 15 goals in 32 starts whilst on loan at Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership, and despite Wrexham offering Dalby a contract extension following the expiration of his deal at the Racecourse Ground, the striker has opted to explore his options elsewhere.

According to the Daily Record, Wigan are interested in acquiring Dalby’s services this summer, in their bid to add further firepower up front.

Wrexham AFC: Sam Dalby verdict issued amid Wigan Athletic interest

FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit, Liam Grice, believes that the forward won’t be a big miss for the Red Dragons upon their return to the second-tier, and that may be worrying for Wigan fans to hear amid their interest.

“From what I’ve seen of Sam Dalby in a Wrexham shirt, I don’t think he was ever really up to the standard of player we wanted at the club to begin with,” Liam told FLW.

“He’s done tremendously well out on loan at Dundee United, and I’m really happy for him, being at a place where you feel you’re enjoying your football is important.

“Maybe that wasn’t the case at Wrexham because he wasn’t starting, and I don’t think he’d come back into this side now and start straight away so I think it’s best for both parties if he moves on.

“I wouldn’t say he’d be prolific in League One, but that’s only from what I’ve seen. If he’s in the right environment and he gets the right players around him, he can score goals, so I wish him the best of luck.”

Sam Dalby could prove to be an excellent deal for Wigan Athletic if they land his services

Wigan Athletic manager Ryan Lowe

Following his flying form with Dundee United, it seems like a no-brainer for any club in the lower divisions of the EFL to try and pursue a deal for Dalby.

However, one sticking point will be his sub-par form with Wrexham.

Despite impressing in Scotland, the striker never hit similar heights with the Red Dragons, something that may cause potential suitors to think twice about a transfer.

That said, if a manager such as Ryan Lowe believes he has the capabilities to coach Dalby into a serious League One threat, the potential for goals is clear to see.

Especially considering the fiscal aspect of the deal, Dalby could be a name that appears on the wish list of a number of League One clubs in weeks to come, so if Wigan want to make a transfer happen, working quickly wouldn’t be unwise.

If harnessed correctly, Dalby has shown he has exactly what it takes to score goals on a regular basis.
