UN Decade Ecosystem Restoration Hub: The Union is invited to share restoration initiatives through a new digital platform – News
The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore them to achieve global goals. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity. The UN Decade runs from 2021 through 2030, which is also the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals and the timeline scientists have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.
IUCN is a Global Partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, engaging in multiple ways to lead and support global, regional, and local restoration initiatives which contribute to the UN Decade. Now, IUCN is supporting the UN Decade in a new way by acting as a Referring Partner through the Ecosystem Restoration Hub, which is a platform administered by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Thus, IUCN invites the Union to showcase their work on this platform by submitting their restoration initiatives directly to the Ecosystem Restoration Hub and listing IUCN as the Referring Partner.
What are the benefits of sharing initiatives through the Ecosystem Restoration Hub?
The platform provides a centralized digital location to catalogue, showcase, and communicate the impacts of restoration initiatives which are contributing to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Ultimately, the platform allows restoration implementors to connect with one another and increase the visibility of their work. The platform not only supports implementers in demonstrating the importance of their work, but it also provides an opportunity for experts, stakeholders, and communities to better understand current restoration efforts and ambitions within their regions.
As the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, IUCN is uniquely positioned to advance the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration while accelerating progress towards climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development targets. This platform provides a critical space for IUCN—the entire Union—to showcase the immense accomplishments being achieved for people and nature through IUCN’s many restoration initiatives. This is also an opportunity for the Union to profile its many successes in advance of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, where nature conservation experts, leaders, and decision-makers from around the world will come together to help shape global priorities for nature conservation and climate change for the coming decade and beyond.
How does the submission process work?
The entire Union is invited to submit their work to this platform—from Member organizations to Commission experts to Secretariat staff to project partners. The process is simple: interested organizations should first select a focal point from their restoration initiative who will be responsible for submitting the initiative’s details and liaising with the Ecosystem Restoration Hub, IUCN, and others who are active on the platform. Then, the focal point should respond to a short IUCN form expressing their interest, create an account on the Ecosystem Restoration Hub, and upload their initiative details. It’s that simple!
Detailed resources in English, French, and Spanish are now available through the IUCN website to walk focal points through the submission process step-by-step. Initiative focal points are welcome to reach out with technical questions directly to the platform administrators at [email protected]. For specific questions related to the referral process or the contributions of IUCN to the UN Decade, please contact Katherine Poe of the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team at [email protected].
