Second Session of the UN-Habitat Assembly, attended by State Committee Chairman concluded
The Second Session of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme – UN-Habitat Assembly held in Nairobi on May 29-30 the capital of Kenya concluded its work, the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture told APA.
It was reported that at the session our countyr was represented by Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and national coordinator for the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
Based on the results of the elections held within the framework of the second resumed session of the UN Habitat Assembly, Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the UN-Habitat Executive Board for the first time. The membership, covering the years 2025–2029, will enable our country to play a more decisive role in the adoption of international decisions in the field of urbanization, and in the formation of a sustainable and inclusive urban environment.
At the session, the theme and date of the World Urban Forum – WUF13, which will be held in Baku in 2026, were officially approved.
Issues related to expanding cooperation with partner countries and supporting active participation in WUF13 were discussed, which will also support the strengthening of Azerbaijan’s position in global urban development processes.
Within the Assembly, a new Strategic Plan covering 2026–2029 and an international guideline on “People-Centered Smart Cities” were also approved. The document defines UN-Habitat’s future directions of activity, setting specific goals and new priorities to respond to global challenges in sustainable urban development.
The Azerbaijani delegation also actively participated in events on “Multilevel Governance for Localization of Sustainable Development Goals,” “Urban Climate and Environment Briefing – 2025 and beyond,” and “Adequate Housing for All.”
Anar Guliyev emphasized the growing role of cities, the importance of COP29 in the global climate agenda, and the high international recognition of the initiatives of the Baku Sustainability Coalition.
During the visit, the Committee chairman meeting with UN-Habitat Executive Director Anclaudia Rosbach, and representatives from Italy, China, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and Kenya, discussed cooperation opportunities in sustainable urban development, “smart” city models, ecological transformation, and digital governance, invited partner countries to actively participate in WUF13.
At the Azerbaijani stand organized within the session, the main plans of WUF13, modern urban development approaches, and our country’s initiatives were presented.
