Gold is lying hidden in Earth’s core and scientists say it’s leaking
UNDATED (WKRC/CNN Newsource) – A groundbreaking study by the University of Göttingen in Germany, published in the journal Nature, suggests that Earth’s core is leaking gold and other precious metals into the layers above.
This phenomenon could eventually bring these metals to the surface during the formation of volcanic islands like Hawaii. Researchers conducted a three-year analysis of Hawaii’s basaltic rocks and discovered heavy metals within the volcanic rocks.
These findings could confirm a long-held suspicion among geologists that Earth’s molten core is not isolated but likely bleeds into the rocky mantle, the layer between the planet’s thin crust and the core.
Scientists have long known that most of the planet’s gold is hidden in the molten core, along with other heavy elements such as platinum. However, this study indicates that at least a small amount of that gold has escaped to the surface.
The prospect of continued leakage raises the possibility that more of this precious metal could travel from the Earth’s center to the crust in the future.
Despite the intriguing findings, the study suggests that the leaking process takes between 500 million and a billion years to complete, so any immediate gold hunting may be premature.
