Meghalaya reviews its climate action amidst urgent environmental concerns

Shillong, June 2: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Environment convened a crucial internal review meeting on Monday to assess the state’s ongoing efforts in climate change adaptation and environmental management. Chaired by Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, the session took place at the Assembly building’s Conference Room in Police Bazaar, Shillong.

The meeting saw active participation from committee members Mayralborn Syiem (MLA, Nongpoh), Methodius Dkhar (MLA, Mawshynrut), Heaving Stone Kharpran (MLA, Mawryngkneng), and co-opted member Dr. Wishming Ryngkhlem. Senior officials from key government departments, district administrations, and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat were also present to provide insights and updates.

Four key departments presented their current initiatives and long-term strategies, highlighting the multi-faceted approach Meghalaya is taking towards environmental sustainability. The Planning, Investment Promotion & Sustainable Development Department detailed its climate policy planning and strategic roadmaps. The Forest and Environment Department focused on innovative funding models and resource mobilization for effective climate action. The Soil & Water Conservation Department showcased critical work in watershed management and land conservation practices. The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board provided a comprehensive overview of the state’s current environmental health through data analysis.

Committee members engaged in in-depth discussions, scrutinizing the effectiveness and future scope of these initiatives. Key concerns raised included the pressing need for enhanced inter-departmental coordination, the development of a robust long-term vision, and the implementation of actionable climate solutions across the state.

Wailadmiki Shylla described the meeting as “a significant step” in Meghalaya’s environmental journey. “This internal meeting was convened to facilitate direct engagement with the departments addressing environmental and climate change challenges in the State,” Shylla stated.

“Considering the current scenario, it is imperative to understand what measures are in place and what long-term strategies are being pursued. The presentations were informative and comprehensive, highlighting various departmental initiatives and future plans spanning the next two to three decades. The Committee also offered constructive suggestions to further strengthen these efforts,” he said.

The committee reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to active oversight and stressed the urgent necessity for continuous collaboration to safeguard Meghalaya’s delicate ecosystems for future generations.
