Similar to the United States and other countries, the UK is acting in an effort to aid nationals stuck in Lebanon. According to BBC, the UK government has chartered a commercial flight out of Lebanon.
- British nationals and children under the age of 18 are priorities, along with vulnerable citizens. The plane is set to leave on Wednesday from Beirut.
There is said to be between 4,000 and 6,000 UK nationals in Lebanon at the moment. The government will be paying for the flight. The plane is set to depart from Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport. There is no timetable at the moment for how fast the UK can get citizens out of Beirut. The hope is for a fast process, but given the current risks involved, there really aren’t any guarantees.
Victoria Lupton, who is in Lebanon at the moment voiced her concerns with BBC. She was told to get a flight elsewhere, without the help of the British government.
“A week ago the British government emailed us saying we should be buying our own flight, which was quite a difficult message to receive because there were no flights to be had.”
Thankfully, Lupton was able to get a flight to Athens, but was then told she was getting a chartered flight from the British government. She decided to stick to her original flight out of Athens. Many are in a similar situation as Lupton, scrambling to get out of Lebanon.
