Yamaha rolls out 5 millionth unit from Chennai factory – Bike News

Besides locally-produced models, Yamaha also offers fully-imported CBU models like R3 and MT-03 in India.

India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. (IYM) has marked a significant manufacturing achievement as its Chennai factory completes a decade of operations, simultaneously celebrating the rollout of its 5 millionth two-wheeler—a Yamaha Aerox 155 Version S. The milestone underscores the strategic importance of the Chennai plant in Yamaha’s global production network, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Over the past ten years, the Chennai facility has emerged as a vital contributor to Yamaha’s manufacturing excellence. Producing a wide range of models including the RayZR 125 Fi, Fascino 125 Fi, and Aerox 155, the plant also exports popular models like the FZ series, Saluto range, and Alpha scooter.

Exports constitute over 30% of the plant’s output, reinforcing its role in Yamaha’s global supply chain. Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group, Mr. Itaru Otani, emphasized the facility’s role in driving innovation and quality: “As one of Yamaha’s most advanced manufacturing sites worldwide, it exemplifies our focus on people, processes, and product excellence.”

The plant spans 177 acres, with 109 acres allocated to IYM and the remaining 68 acres to vendor partners. This integrated ‘One Factory’ approach enhances synchronization, efficiency, and supply chain performance. The factory has consistently adapted to India’s evolving mobility demands, positioning itself as an export hub that meets stringent global standards.

Focus on sustainability and global reach

The Chennai plant not only delivers high-performance two-wheelers but also stands as a model of sustainable and smart manufacturing. The facility incorporates solar power infrastructure with a capacity of 4,450 kW, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. Advanced water recycling systems, solar-compatible architecture, and centralized utilities further align the plant with Yamaha’s green manufacturing goals.

Over the years, Yamaha has leveraged this facility to support its premium product strategy across small to midrange engine displacements, addressing both Indian and overseas markets. With a focus on digital systems, cutting-edge technologies, and compliance with stringent environmental norms, the factory is well-prepared for the future of global two-wheeler production.
