Turkmenistan was elected to one of the key UN bodies

Turkmenistan has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2026-2028, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reports.

The elections took place during the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

ECOSOC is the central platform of the UN for discussing international economic and social issues and formulating policy recommendations. The Council coordinates the economic and social activities of 15 UN agencies, functional commissions and five regional commissions.

The ECOSOC’s mandate includes promoting sustainable development in its three dimensions – economic, social and environmental. The Council plays a key role in the follow-up and review of the implementation of the outcome documents of all major UN conferences and summits in the economic and social fields.

The Council consists of 54 Member States elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term. Each year, 18 members are elected to replace those whose terms expire. Seats in ECOSOC are distributed on a regional basis.

This is the third election for Turkmenistan to ECOSOC. Previously, the country was a member of the Council in 2013-2015 and 2019-2021.
