Neosho Arts Council to take part in Make Music Day – Newstalk KZRG

Neosho Arts Council will be taking part in Make Music Day with two community concerts and a special mini-concert tour for the Neosho School Districts Summer School program. Make Music Day is an international celebration that encourages the enjoyment and participation in live music.

“Around the world communities will engage with live music on June 21,” explained Sarah Serio, president of the Neosho Arts Council. “Since the 21st falls on a Saturday we are going to also be celebrating with some events on June 20.”

Lunch and Listen

The council’s annual Lunch and Listen concert will be hosted June 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Neosho National Fish Hatchery with country/rock musician Jim Graham.

“We designed the Lunch and Listen concert to give community members the opportunity to take their lunch hour and really take a break from their work day to experience live music,” Serio said. Presenting live music with the beautiful waters and grounds of the hatchery was an easy decision according to the Council as both are shown to be stress relievers.

The free mid-day concert is a come and go event and patrons of all ages are welcome to bring their lunch and enjoy the music. Graham will perform a selection of folk, country, and Americana inspired works.

Dandelion Heart

On Saturday June 21 Dandelion Heart will perform live from the Grecian Stage in Big Spring Park at 6:30 p.m.

“This is our final concert for the spring series we’ve been hosting and a great way to celebrate Make Music Day,” Serio said.

Dandelion Heart is an Americana/indie rock group out of Northwest Arkansas. The group strives to capture the beauty in simplicity with penetrating harmonies while featuring a blend of folk, bluegrass, rock, and indie sounds.

“Everyone might recognize one member of the group, Lacy Hampton,” Serio said. “She’s also part of the award winning duo Common Roots that performed at last year’s Make Music Day concert.”

The arts council invites everyone to both concerts which are free and open to all ages. The group will be hosting a sidewalk chalk art fun draw at Big Spring Park with the theme of All Things Music.

“These evening concerts are great for families because you can experience live music and kids can enjoy chalk art, play on the playground, and those 8 years old and younger can swim at Big Spring Park’s historic wading pool,” Serio said.

In addition to the community concerts the council is sponsoring musicians to present live music for both the elementary school and the middle/junior high summer school programs.

“This is the third year we have been able to bring live music into Neosho’s summer school session and expose students to a live musical performance as part of Make Music Day,” Serio said.

Buffalo Creek Incident will be performing traditional mountain music at two of the schools. The group features stringed instruments like the fiddle, dulcimer, and guitar while performing songs that have deep roots in the ballads of Ireland and the British Isles with added elements from across early America. The other locations will enjoy a special performance by Lacy Hampton who is an Arkansas Country Music Awards winner.

Make Music Day is a one-day event where free, live musical performances, opportunities to make music, and other musical events take place around the world on the longest day of the year. Musical festivities in Neosho are part of a celebration of music making in over 1,000 cities globally. This year Neosho is one of only a few cities in Missouri taking part including St. Louis, Kansas City, and Columbia.
