vThe CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, leads one of the most powerful tech companies today, but his motivation doesn’t come from just positive thoughts. Stephen Witt, who interviewed Huang for his book, The Thinking Machine, found that Huang’s main motivation comes from feelings like anxiety, fear and guilt. Huang is deeply afraid of failing, and this fear pushes him to work harder and stay focused. Witt was surprised to learn that Huang feels uneasy when things are going smoothly, and he works best when he acts as if Nvidia might fail at any moment. This constant pressure keeps Huang alert and ready to face challenges.

Stephen Witt told CNBC, “This is his fuel. This is his gasoline, [and it’s] what makes him go is this anxiety. I think the most surprising thing about Jensen is that he’s almost totally driven by negative emotions. He’s really motivated by fear and guilt to a significant extent: fear of failure, paranoia about competition, and guilt about letting people down.”

Stephen Witt, who has spoken to many CEOs over the years, says most of them are usually very confident, positive and energetic. But Jensen Huang is different. Even though he works very hard, the CEO always feels like he should be working more. The author also noticed that Huang doesn’t feel relaxed when things are going smoothly, instead, it makes him nervous.

Jensen Huang admits that he’s a tough boss and not always easy to work with. He believes that stress pushes people to do their best. For him, doing big and difficult things means the process won’t be smooth or simple. In his view, if something is truly special, it should take hard work and pressure to achieve it.

In March 2024, Huang shared with Stanford University students that his journey was filled with ups and downs, including a time when Nvidia almost failed just a few years after starting. He believes one reason he managed to succeed was that he never expected things to be perfect or easy. He pointed out that people who expect too much from life can sometimes struggle when things go wrong because they’re not used to failure. In his view, being able to handle tough times is very important for success.
