Stanley Kubrick highlighted the unsettling power of a long hotel corridor with his horror film The Shining, and now an upcoming A24 release is set to reignite fears of a sprawling space on an even bigger scale.

The studio is working on a sci-fi film based on viral short by Kane Parsons titled The Backrooms (Found Footage). While the plot of the adaptation remains under wraps, the original 10-minute film is set in 1996 and follows a filmmaker as he’s suddenly plunged into an eerie, sickly-yellow space that resembles a giant office, pursued by something that only appears in his peripheral vision.

The short – which has now amassed over 66 million views on YouTube – was inspired by an internet story, or creepypasta, that began on 4Chan centred around a fictional and seemingly endless liminal spaces known as the ‘Backrooms’ that exist on the fringes of reality.

The concept has even inspired a series of games which follow the premise of wandering endlessly around unsettling spaces where something may or may not be hiding around the corner.

Following his success with The Backrooms short, Parsons has since created a whole series of found-footage horrors shared to his Kane Pixels YouTube channel which have been widely praised by viewers.

He will be at the helm as director of the big-screen adaptation of his work, adapted by A24, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment and 21 Laps, which is exciting news for fans of the short.

“This man is actually insane, he manages to create horror that is scarier than 90% of Hollywood horror films,” penned one Parsons fan under the The Backrooms short, while another viewer said: “Companies with a way bigger budget can’t even replicate something this terrifying. This really isn’t for the faint of heart.”

Another added: “This is by far the best depiction of the backrooms I’ve ever seen, especially when you consider that 80% of the stuff you find of the backrooms are still images.”

While The Backrooms movie is still in the early stages, and no news of a release date yet issued, Deadline shared a huge update about who could star in the upcoming project.

Black Mirror star Cristin Milioti, famed for playing Nanette Cole in the series’ USS Callister episodes, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Love Actually, The Martian) are both reportedly in talks for roles.

A release date for The Backrooms is yet to be announced
