The Broadway Musical’ Movie is Coming To Disney+ This Month

Disney’s 2013 juggernaut film, Frozen, inspired a lot of things: sequels, toys, the answer to a decades-long mystery, and a generation of eldest daughters to “let it go.” It also inspired a Broadway musical adaptation that has, of course, become its own sort of success story. So much so, that Disney has gone ahead and filmed a performance of the theatrical version, and it’s going to be released this month on Disney+. And they even released a trailer to get you excited and interested about it.

The clip, which features the announcement of the release date, June 20, 2025, teases the allure of watching the Broadway production. Perhaps the biggest of which includes the 12 new songs that were written for the stage musical. And if that doesn’t blow your mind, surely the sheer spectacle of it all (and all those impressive practical effects) will. But don’t just take our word for it, check out the trailer in the section below.

The Disney+ Release of ‘Frozen: The Musical’ Is A Win For Broader Theater Access

According to a press release from Disney+:

“When Queen Elsa’s hidden powers plunge Arendelle into an eternal winter, her sister Anna sets out to find her and save the kingdom. As the storm rages on, both sisters must learn only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart. This is the story you know and love as you’ve never seen it before. Disney’s ‘Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical’ is an awe-inspiring production which brings the magic, music and spectacle of the hit movie to the stage, with thrilling surprises and astonishing special effects. Enjoy 12 new songs written especially for the musical, alongside classics such as ‘For the First Time in Forever,’ ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman?,’ and ‘Let it Go.'”

Now, listen. We get it. It’s so easy to hate on musicals: people singing all the time? Acting and dancing through their emotions? Listen: I get it! We were raised in a world that seems increasingly allergic to earnestness and cringe. But look deep within your soul, you most anti-musical person, you, and in there lives a person who can admit that it’s impressive, all that these actors and behind-the-scenes creatives do to create a world live on stage. The physical aptitude and ability, the thought and care that went into every single detail? You don’t have to like it to admit that there’s something really special and cool happening when people work towards creating something so multidimensional.

But also: maybe people wouldn’t be so quick to hate the artform if they had more access to it. So they could better understand and appreciate it. (But also maybe not! Different strokes, different folks, etc.) Broadway is notoriously expensive and theater in general is often viewed as a snobby, elitist, and/or academic sort of thing to enjoy. Putting Broadway productions on television and streaming services is a demonstrably good thing: it gives access many people (especially kids) wouldn’t otherwise have to an art form that’s as powerful as any other. They did it with Hamilton, and now they’re doing it with this — and even the more traditional networks are getting in on the endeavor, too. George Clooney‘s vitally prescient theatrical run of Good Night and Good Luck will be airing live, from Broadway, on CNN this Saturday, June 7, 2025.
