Disney Star to Play the Unabomber in New Netflix Movie

Tremblay stars as young Ted Kaczynski, with Russel Crowe (Gladiator), Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) also starring. Janus Metz (All the Old Knives) is set to direct from a script written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves (Sleepy Hollow). Filming is currently underway, with Netflix teasing an official release date will be revealed in the future.

Mark Ruffalo Will Attempt to Woo Natalie Portman in New Netflix Movie—But He’s Got Competition

Mark Ruffalo has landed a leading role in the upcoming Netflix movie.

“UNABOM is a story about a young man who feels increasingly disenfranchised by society and decides to take up violence as a means of revenge,” Metz said in Netflix’s press release. “We crosscut between two timelines, roughly speaking: the making of the Unabomber and the capture of the Unabomber.”

The UNABOM director went on to talk about how perfect he feels Tremblay is for the chilling titular role. “Jacob Tremblay is an immensely talented young actor,” Metz said. “He has a sensitivity that feels perfect for my vision of Ted when he was a young student at Harvard. There’s a vulnerability and intelligence to Jacob’s look and performance that this story needs. I was convinced that Jacob was right for the part after our first conversation, and it has been a huge pleasure to now finally be able to do the work and hone in on the character with him.”

“I was fascinated by the fact that the hunt for the Unabomber was the FBI’s longest and most expensive operation to date,” Metz added. “But what really drew me in was the story about Ted Kaczynski’s years at Harvard when he was a young math student. This was a side to the story I didn’t know about; it helps uncover a very dark chapter in American history.”

Tremblay’s New Role as the Unabomber Contrasts Previous Disney Works

UNABOM is inspired by real-life events, and Netflix describes it as following Kaczynski’s transformation from Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber. After being subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Crowe), the young man’s troubled past resurfaces decades later, with a manhunt led by FBI agent Joanna Miller (Woodley), bringing to light “the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.”

Stepping into the role of Kaczynski is certainly a shift from Tremblay’s previous works. His notable roles include playing a child with Treacher Collins syndrome in 2017’s drama Wonder and a naive sixth grader in 2019’s comedy Good Boys. Comics fans will recognize him as the voice of Damian Wayne and Robin in Max’s Harley Quinn series. He also portrayed the titular character in Disney/Pixar’s Luca and was the voice of Flounder in the live-action The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey.

An official release date for Netflix’s UNABOM has not been announced at this time.
