Saukuru Proposes Sporting Facilities Be Handed Over To Fiji Sports Council
Saukuru added that municipalities are running on rate payers money and upgrading sports facilities is not their top priority.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru is proposing that all sporting facilities owned and managed by municipalities be handed to the Fiji Sports Council.
He said this will help in the upgrading and maintenance of the sports venues; a draft paper has been prepared regarding this.
He made these comments when questioned why the Government has not assisted in the process of lifting the standards of sports grounds including Labasa’s Subrail Park and Savusavu’s Ganilau Park.
“Instead of helping individual municipalities why don’t we just move all the ground to FSC (Fiji Sports Council) and Government can assist in restoring all these grounds to international standards. They (FSC) are there to cater for all sports facilities.
Saukuru added that municipalities are running on rate payers money and upgrading sports facilities is not their top priority.
“We would rather put it to somebody whose priority is in sports.
He confirmed some town councils have shown interest while others are reluctant.
“Some municipal council argue they had invested a lot of capital into these sporting venues,” Saukuru said.
Labasa Town Council special administrator, Samuela Ligairi, said they do not agree on complete submission of shifting the responsibility to FSC.
Ligairi said while critics have called Subrail Park needing an upgrade, the council had invested $250,000 in preparation for last year’s Fiji FACT tournament.
He added the Government could assist with annual funds to help the town council maintain the facility and ensure good playing conditions.
“We have invested a lot of money; Subrail Park is not just council owned but the pride of the Labasa people,” Ligairi said.
He added that he was open to discussion to explore options to improve Subrail Park where the Battle of Giants (BOG) tournament will be hosted this year.
