Indian Railways deploys special Vande Bharat trains, Western Railway teams for relief after Air India crash
In response to the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday, Indian Railways has announced a series of measures to aid stranded passengers and their families. These include the deployment of Western Railway’s disaster management units as well as the planning of special Vande Bharat trains to help evacuate affected individuals.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff at 1:39 pm with 242 people on board. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the aircraft made a MAYDAY call before crashing near Meghaninagar. At the time of departure, the plane was heavily fueled for the international journey, intensifying the fire and explosion upon impact. Rescue and relief efforts remain ongoing.
Special Vande Bharat Trains
Indian Railways is planning to operate special Vande Bharat trains to assist in the evacuation of people stranded in Ahmedabad following the crash. These trains will provide immediate transportation options for passengers’ relatives and other affected individuals.
The Ministry of Railways is coordinating closely with state authorities to assess demand and determine optimal destinations. Officials have said that the trains will be announced shortly, depending on the situation on the ground and the number of people needing transport to other cities.
Western Railway teams join rescue ops
The Western Railway’s disaster management team has been actively involved in rescue operations at the crash site. According to Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, medical teams and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have been deployed to assist in ongoing relief efforts.

Authorities continue to coordinate across departments as the full extent of the crash’s impact becomes clearer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed senior Union Ministers to personally oversee relief measures, and Air India has set up an emergency response centre for passenger families.
