Sport Minister discusses expedited UK visas for athletes | Local Sports
Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, has opened discussions with British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Jon Dean, on the introduction of expedited visa processing for sportspersons traveling to the United Kingdom.
A release from the Ministry of Sport stated that the meeting “facilitated meaningful dialogue on several areas of mutual interest, with a particular focus on strategic partnerships, inclusivity, and the expansion of opportunities for local athletes and youth.”
The release stated that a key point on the agenda was the visa application process for athletes, with special emphasis on the potential for expedited UK visas for Trinidad and Tobago sportspersons.
Last week, cricketer Akeal Hosein’s arrival in the UK to Join the West Indies T20 team for a series against England was delayed because he did not get a UK visa in time for the start of the series, while countryman Jyd Goolie failed entirely to make what would have been his first West Indies tour, because of failure to get a visa waiver.
Minister Watts underscored the need for more streamlined travel procedures to support athletes who train or compete internationally, particularly in the United Kingdom.
Both parties acknowledged the critical role international exposure plays in athlete development and committed to exploring practical solutions to reduce administrative barriers.
The Minister and High Commissioner also discussed potential collaborative programmes to support differently-abled athletes, reaffirming their shared dedication to advancing equity and accessibility within sport.
The Minsitry said the courtesy call marked the beginning of what both officials described as a “constructive and forward-looking partnership” to promote youth and sport development in Trinidad and Tobago.
