Ellington High School Standout Wins Prestigious Statewide Athletic Accolade
ELLINGTON, CT — A phenomenal season which ended just shy of a berth in the state championship game has brought individual acclaim to a standout softball player from Ellington High School.
Senior pitcher Camryn Fisher has been selected as the 2024-25 Gatorade Connecticut Softball Player of the Year after posting mind-boggling numbers throughout the season. Until a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning of a Class M semifinal showdown against Waterford Wednesday, the right-hander had not allowed an earned run all season.
Including three state tournament contests, Fisher pitched 166 innings and struck out 426 batters, an incredible 2.57 strikeouts per inning. She compiled a 21-2 record, with her only other loss being a 2-1 early-season defeat to Tolland in which both Eagle runs were unearned due to three Ellington errors.
Her earned-run average wound up at 0.04, and opponents posted a batting average of less than .030 against her. She twirled 12 no-hitters during the regular season, and topped that with back-to-back perfect games in the Knights’ state tournament victories over Lyman Hall and Ledyard. She established a Connecticut record by striking out 37 hitters in a 14-inning victory over Hale Ray on April 19.
Not just one dimensional, the 5-foot-7 Fisher helped herself at the plate, batting over .400 with six home runs and 32 runs batted in.
She is ranked the No. 42 prospect in her class by Extra Innings Softball. In the fall, she will take her skills to Appalachian State University in North Carolina. Off the field, the honor roll student volunteers for Special Olympics, the Vernon Soup Kitchen and the Enfield Senior Center. She is also a school leader, as the president of Ellington High School’s Debate Club.
“Camryn is the embodiment of a relentless competitor, driven by an inner fire and an unmatched work ethic that truly sets her apart,” head coach Tom Gordon said. “Her dedication is second to none; she simply cannot be outworked. Every ounce of effort, sacrifice, and commitment she pours into her sport reflects her unwavering character and determination to be the best version of herself.”
Teammate Tyla Gambacorta said, “Camryn is an amazing teammate. She is someone you can count on and look up to on and of the field. She always has a smile on her face and always lifts up others when they aren’t having their best day.”
“I think she is well-deserving of it,” tri=captain Madison Havener said. “She has done amazing this year, setting records and being the best teammate to all of us. I know her stats show she is worthy of this title, but she sees our team as a family and doesn’t give up on us. I’m so proud of her and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.”
Tri-captain Mickyla Wong said, “Seeing her work and putting in the effort gave me no doubts that she could achieve this. I can’t wait to see the great things she does in the future and what more she can achieve by putting in the work day by day.”
