A devastating tragedy unfolded in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon when an Air India flight en route to London crashed a few seconds after take-off. The ill-fated flight departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.38 pm and crash-landed into a residential area in the Meghani Nagar area, impacting a boys’ hostel.

Since the tragic news, Air India, the nation’s flagship carrier, has garnered immense criticism for the lack of maintenance of its aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The attacks against the airline saw a monumental rise when a passenger—who travelled on the same flight two hours prior to the crash—posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing malfunctioning air conditioning, a faulty call button, and stagnant in-flight screens.
Stepping forward to the defence of the airline is Vir Das. Offering his condolences, the comedian posted on X that he has been a long-time flyer on Air India and extended his support to the crew. He wrote, “It is not an airline without problems but without fail, I know them to be the best crew in the sky. Time will tell what happened on this tragic flight.”

“Time will tell what happened on this tragic flight. I cannot imagine how hard it is for them to do their job right now having lost their own. For the crew, just to say one stands with you. And hopes to see you soon on a flight,” the comedian concluded.
The Air India flight had 230 passengers, 10 crew members and 2 pilots. The only survivor, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, miraculously escaped the wreckage.
