Air India ramps up safety checks on Dreamliner fleet after AI-171 tragedy

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 14: In the aftermath of the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash, the airline has begun urgent safety inspections of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, following a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

In an update shared on X, Air India confirmed that nine of its Boeing 787 aircraft have already undergone comprehensive one-time safety inspections. These inspections are mandatory for all 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft fitted with Genx engines, and must be completed before the aircraft can resume operations. The airline stated that the remaining 24 aircraft will be inspected as they return to India, with completion expected well within the regulator’s deadline.

“These safety checks are being conducted as aircraft arrive back in India and are a prerequisite before they are cleared for further flights,” Air India said in its statement. However, the airline warned that the inspections could result in longer turnaround times and potential delays, particularly on long-haul international routes that are constrained by airport curfews.

To assist affected travelers, Air India has offered full refunds or free rescheduling for passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled due to the ongoing inspections. The airline also advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

The DGCA’s directive, issued after the AI-171 crash, includes a thorough inspection of fuel systems, cabin air compressors, hydraulic systems, flight control mechanisms, and Genx engines. All airlines operating the Dreamliner model are required to begin these checks from June 15 and submit detailed compliance reports.

Meanwhile, as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, Tata Sons—the parent company of Air India—has announced substantial financial aid for the victims’ families. Each family of the deceased, including passengers, crew members, and any individuals affected on the ground, will receive Rs 1 crore as compensation. Additionally, Tata Sons has pledged to cover the full medical costs of the injured, ensuring both immediate and long-term care.

The airline’s intensified safety measures and Tata Group’s compensation plan come as part of a broader response to one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Indian history, aimed at restoring trust and reinforcing passenger safety.
