‘Sinners’ Passes the 50-Year-Old Blockbuster Quentin Tarantino Called “The Greatest Film Ever Made” at the Domestic Box Office

After nearly two months of release in theaters worldwide (and having debuted on PVOD platforms), director Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners has notched what will likely be its last box office victory. Sinners is now the second-biggest horror movie in domestic box office history, having overtaken the half-century-old hit that literally invented the concept of summer blockbusters. Director Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year; the movie featured Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw in the lead roles.

Director Quentin Tarantino is among its legions of fans, having described it on numerous occasions as “the greatest movie ever made.” He said on the ReelBlend podcast a few years ago, “I think Jaws is the greatest movie ever made. Maybe not the greatest film. But it’s the greatest movie ever made. And then there are other movies that can get in its rarefied air. But as far as a movie, there’s no making it better than Jaws. There’s no ‘better’ than Jaws. It is the best movie ever made. And it shows how badly timed most movies made before Jaws were.” Tarantino appeared to be suggesting that there is a difference between a movie that is designed for commercial success, and one that is aimed at a slightly more discerning crowd.

Jaws grossed $273 million in its domestic box office run, and was the highest-grossing film in history at the time of its release. On its 56th day of release, Sinners overtook this milestone. The vampire film has made $274 million at the domestic box office, and it now trails only the first It in the all-time rankings of the biggest horror hits in history. Remarkable as its success at the domestic box office has been, Sinners underperformed in overseas markets, failing to hit the $100 million mark. Its disappointing overseas run reaffirms the tragic trend of movies featuring a predominantly Black cast failing to perform in foreign markets.

‘Sinners’ is the Most Acclaimed Mainstream Hollywood Film of the Year

Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, Sinners is the most acclaimed mainstream Hollywood release of the year. It holds a near-perfect 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. The film’s audience score on the aggregator website stands at an equally impressive 96%. Featuring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, Sinners was praised for Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s cinematography and Ludwig Göransson‘s score, in addition to the thematic depth of Coogler’s writing. The director struck an unusual deal with Warner Bros., which will see the movie’s rights revert to him after 25 years. Sinnersglobal box office haul stands at the cusp of the $360 million mark.
