Delhi to Establish Second Automated Vehicle Testing Station at Tehkhand Depot, ET Auto

Another such facility in Burari is under construction and is currently operating as a manual facility.Delhi Transport Corporation has initiated the process of setting up a new four-lane automated testing station at its Tehkhand depot in southeast Delhi. The testing station, with a budget of around ₹2 crore, is expected to be completed in four months. This will serve as Delhi’s second automated testing station, following the existing facility at Jhuljhuli, which currently operates beyond its capacity.

The Union govt’s directive last year, mandating states to establish automated testing station facilities for commercial vehicle permit testing, has intensified the vehicle congestion at Jhuljhuli. Another such facility in Burari is under construction and is currently operating as a manual facility.

“This facility will reduce manual inspection, ensure transparency and improve the roadworthiness of vehicles. Advanced technology and modern software systems will be employed to evaluate various vehicle parameters, including emissions, brakes, suspension and alignment measurements. The reason behind the selection of the Tehkhand depot was its ample space and central connectivity for vehicles that find the Jhuljhuli centre too far,” said a senior official.

The automation will include tests of roller brakes, headlights, speedometers, steering linkage, gear, suspension, sound level, side slip, insulation, etc. Equipment like smoke opacimeter, onboard diagnostics scanner and exhaust gas analyser will also be used. Different areas, including emission test and visual inspection areas, electrical panel rooms and sheds, will be created.

The transport department plans to have five new automated testing stations across Delhi.
