Honda Elevate hybrid spotted testing in Brazil: India bound? – Car News

Currently, Honda is available with a single 1.5-litre iVtec naturally aspirated petrol engine which is paired with either a 6-speed manual or an 7-step CVT automatic transmission.

The compact C-segment of SUVs was a crowded space when Honda launched the Elevate last year. Much to everyone’s surprise, the Japanese carmaker didn’t launch a strong hybrid version of the SUV since it is based on the same platform as the City which comes with a strong hybrid powertrain option.

Everyone believed that it was a missed opportunity, but Honda is known to keep all its developments close to the chest. A set of spy images clicked in Brazil has emerged on the internet which reveal that Honda is indeed developing a greener version of the Elevate with an combustion engine.

Honda Elevate hybrid: Expected details

Internationally sold as the WR-V including Japan, the latest set of spy shots reveal a fully camouflaged test unit of Elevate appear to be the same as India-spec model. Due to heavy camouflaging, it is difficult to comprehend any minor visual changes, apart from the new alloy wheels. The flat front face featuring an all-black rectangular grille flanked by sleek LED headlights and a stubby tail light make it unmistakable for any other car.

We expect the interiors of the Elevate hybrid to remain the same as its India-spec sibling with highlights such as a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch multimedia centre, automatic air conditioning, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear selector knob, and wireless smartphone charger, etc.

Safety features will include six airbags and Level 1 ADAS features as part of Honda Sensing which comprises automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation system, lane keeping assist, collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control to name a few.

Honda Elevate hybrid: Powertrain

Coming to the heart of the matter, the Elevate hybrid will borrow the same powertrain as the City e:HEV featuring a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Carnot cycle petrol engine working in tandem with two other electric motors. The petrol engine pushes out 98 bhp and 126 Nm of peak torque by itself whereas the electric motors combine to produce 108 bhp and 253 Nm of torque.

The engine supplies energy to the battery which drives the electric motors. While one motor acts as a traction motor which drives the front wheels, the other acts as a generator.  The system also supports recharging of batteries via regenerative braking and hence the car can run in electric-only mode for limited periods.

Honda Elevate hybrid: Will it come to India?

At the time of its launch in India, Honda firmly said that it is not looking at bringing a strong hybrid version of the Elevate. Instead, the Japanese brand will develop a fully electric derivative of the Elevate which is expected to launch by 2026. However, if Honda is indeed developing an Elevate e:HEV and with the global slowdown in EV sales, it might not be a bad idea to bring a hybrid version of Elevate to India.
