Syiem calls for joint Meghalaya-Assam action to tackle Byrnihat air Pollution

Shillong, July 18: Nongpoh MLA and member of the Environment Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mayralborn Syiem, has expressed confidence that collaborative efforts between Meghalaya and Assam will lead to a lasting solution to improve air quality in Byrnihat.

Syiem emphasised the need for a comprehensive survey to trace the source of the pollution—whether from industries within Meghalaya, across the border in Assam, or from other unidentified origins.

He underscored the importance of pinpointing the root cause, noting that the pollution could be emanating from either side of the interstate boundary.

“This is a serious environmental concern that requires a proper scientific study to understand where exactly the pollution is coming from,” he said.

Syiem assured that the Meghalaya government is treating the issue with urgency. Referring to recent Assembly discussions, he highlighted that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had clearly stated on the floor of the House that “the government will leave no stone unturned to address the pollution affecting the border areas.”

Describing the problem as a “contagious issue” that demands immediate redressal, Syiem said he has already spoken to the chairman of the Environment Committee.

He added that internal deliberations are underway, and the panel plans to engage with its counterpart in Assam soon to jointly assess the situation and work towards ensuring cleaner air for Byrnihat and surrounding regions.
