A heartwarming tradition unites generations through music and dance

PULASKI (WLUK) — A fun summer tradition has returned to Pulaski once again.

Despite rain in the forecast, Pulaski Polka Days is back for its 46th year as hundreds of people are already joining in on the weekend-long fun.

Whether you’re there for the polka music, dancing or just the food, there’s something at Pulaski Polka Days for everyone. It’s a tradition that brings people from all over together.

Polka music in Pulaski is one of the more familiar sounds of summer in northeast Wisconsin.

“It’s just the happy-go-lucky upbeat kind of music that you can just dance and smile and have a great time too,” Pulaski Polka Days Interim Promoter Adam Strassburg said.

This year’s Pulaski Polka Days features 20 different bands from across the country.

Together, they provide the tunes that bring out the polka dance moves in everyone who attends.

“It’s getting to be a tradition of mine, I’ve gone three years in a row now, kind of hard to step away. It’s too much fun,” attendee Andy Foht said.

“If you want to come and have a good time, put a smile on your face, and learn how to Polish hop, this is the place to be,” attendee Shelley Brusky said.

Brusky has been attending Polka Days since she was a little girl, learning how to polka dance from her mom. She was still able to get her mom on the floor again this year, despite battling a debilitating disease.

“There is genuinely something about polka music and any kind of music in general with anyone with dementia or old age, it sure does bring that liveliness and I know she can feel it,” Brusky said.

While many come to the yearly festival for the polka music, you can’t forget about those delicious Polish food smells wafting through the air.

Everything from Polish sausage, sauerkraut, pierogies, and cabbage rolls, you can’t miss with your order.

But the crowd favorite, is the pierogies.

“The pierogi express is right at this line,” Pulaski Polka Days volunteer Kaleb Santy said. “We just can’t cook them fast enough. We’ve got fryers, and all kinds of experts back there that are making these things as fast as they can and we can’t keep up with the crowd.”

Santy expects them to serve up 7,000 to 8,000 pierogies throughout the weekend.

Between mouthwatering food, music, and camaraderie, it’s a weekend celebration sure to bring out your best polka dance.

Pulaski Polka Days runs all weekend, with a parade on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

The festival runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, admission is free and runs until 7 p.m.
