Chilliwack film fest organizers fundraise to buy ‘iconic’ Cottonwood 4 equipment

Organizers of a Chilliwack film festival want to save and reuse pieces of equipment that were once part of the now-closed Cottonwood 4 Cinemas, and they’re asking the public to help them.

Taras Groves and Amy Pridday with Chilliwack Independent Film Festival (CIFF) have a goal to raise $10,000 to buy the original seats, screen, and projector from Cottonwood 4 Cinemas, which screened its last film on June 30.

The cinema was home to CIFF’s first festival back in 2017, and a place where the local film event grew so much that it took over all four of Cottonwood’s theatres for its 2024 festival in November.

“CIFF grew up in the heart of Cottonwood,” reads the GoFundMe campaign.

They’re calling it ‘Save the Heart of Cinema One: Cottonwood Legacy Fund’. The festival society is a non-profit and Groves said any help would be huge as it’s a big expense for them.

“For decades, Cottonwood was more than just a theatre – it was a vibrant gathering place where stories came alive, friendships were forged, and local film culture blossomed.

“Now, we have a unique opportunity to preserve the soul of this beloved space.”

Groves and Pridday said their goal is to bring these “iconic pieces back to life in a new venue, creating a home where future generations can experience the magic of independent film, just as we did.”

All funds raised will help purchase, transport and store the items until they can be used at CIFF’s new location.

“While we don’t yet have a venue secured, this campaign is about safeguarding the very heart of a space that meant so much to so many. It’s about honouring our past and investing in the future of Chilliwack’s film community.”

The festival, started by Groves in 2017, has been recognized locally and around the world.

Back in 2018, CIFF placed in the top 100 best reviewed film festivals on FilmFreeway, out of 7,000-plus festivals. It was named to MovieMaker Magazine’s 2023 list of ‘50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee’. The festival has featured countless local filmmakers over its years, including Chilliwack high-school students. CIFF was also a finalist in the 2023/2024 Chilliwack Business Excellence Awards.

The festival has grown from 29 films to more than 100 over its eight years.

“Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to keeping the spirit of Cottonwood alive.”
