Meghalaya emerges as a model of resilient, self-reliant India: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that Meghalaya stands as a blueprint for a resilient and self-reliant India.
Modi shared an article written by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, which highlights Meghalaya’s remarkable transformation driven by tourism, youth empowerment, women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and initiatives such as the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Vibrant Village Programme, and more.
Responding to the Finance Minister’s post on X, Modi stated: “Union Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman highlights Meghalaya’s remarkable transformation driven by tourism, youth empowerment, women-led SHGs, initiatives like the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Vibrant Village Programme and more. With strong government support and vibrant community spirit, the state stands as a blueprint for a resilient and self-reliant India.”
Earlier, in her post on X, Sitharaman said:
“The Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, Donald Wahlang, recounted how in 2005 he had to swim across a river to reach the village of Nongjri. Today, a bridge—completed in 2021—symbolises Prime Minister Modi’s steely resolve to overcome the challenges faced by remote and border areas.”
She further noted in her article published in an English daily: “Recently, during my tour of Meghalaya, I travelled by road from Guwahati to Shillong. The road was wide, and traffic flowed smoothly. This was once an old, winding route—perilously narrow and congested—where smoke-emitting lorries made travel miserable.”
“My first stop was at the backwaters of the scenic Umiam Lake in Ri Bhoi district. The rivers Wah Umkhrah and Wah Umshyrpi were dammed in the 1960s to harness hydel power. Today, the man-made lake has also become a hub for water sports and adventure activities,” she added.
“Tourism has created year-round livelihood opportunities for those living near the lake, emblematic of the collaborative approach of the government and citizens towards areas with tourism potential,” the Finance Minister concluded.
