World Test Championship: India snubbed as England bag right to host next three WTC finals

The ICC has confirmed that England will host the next three World Test Championship finals scheduled for 2027, 2029 and 2031 – extending the streak of England-based finals since the competition’s inception.

The announcement was made at the ICC’s annual conference in Singapore where officials cited England’s proven ability to host marquee Test matches as a key factor. The decision comes as a surprise to many — especially with India reportedly keen on staging at least one of the upcoming finals.

With the BCCI’s considerable sway in world cricket and India’s immense fan base, many had assumed the WTC final would eventually make its way to the subcontinent. However, the ICC chose to stick with the tried-and-tested formula of English venues: most likely Lord’s for the foreseeable future.

ICC praises England’s hosting record

In a statement released by the ICC, England’s “successful track record in hosting recent finals” was highlighted as the reason for their continued selection. The 2025 final was held at Lord’s.

It saw South Africa defeat Australia in front of nearly 110,000 spectators across four days of action. Despite England never having reached a WTC final, the country’s infrastructure and fan engagement continue to make it a reliable destination.

Reacting to the announcement, England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Richard Gould said,

“We are absolutely delighted that England and Wales has been chosen to host the next three ICC World Test Championship finals. It’s a testament to the passion that fans in this country have for this treasured format of the game and the willingness of supporters from around the world to travel here for these games.”

India’s wait continues

India reached the first two WTC finals but fell short on both occasions. They will now need to chase glory once again in England – should they qualify.

While the BCCI has not made any official comment, the snub is bound to stir conversation back home – especially given India’s appetite for hosting major cricket events.
