DCU ‘Wonder Woman’ Film Hires ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Teen Titans’ Writer

DC Studios’ new Wonder Woman reboot is gaining momentum as the film’s writer has been revealed, one who is quickly becoming a key architect of the DCU. Wonder Woman is one of the DC Trinity, alongside Superman and Batman, and a key figure in both DC Comics and the DC Universe’s future. Despite not having a solo feature film announced during the initial Gods and Monsters slate in 2023, apart from a television prequel before her birth titled Paradise Lost, a feature film reboot is now being fast-tracked by Warner Bros.

Variety confirmed that Ana Nogueira is writing the script for the next Wonder Woman film. Nogueira is no stranger to the DCU, as she penned the script for the upcoming Supergirl film and is also writing Teen Titans. Nogueira is a playwright, having written Empathitrax and Which Way to the Stage. She has also worked as an actress and has appeared on The Blacklist, The Vampire Diaries, and Hightown.

“She’d Be Great”: James Gunn Backs Fan-Favorite Wonder Woman Fancasting

James Gunn says exactly what fans were thinking about this potential Wonder Woman actress.

Nogueira has been given the task of redefining Wonder Woman less than a decade after audiences were introduced to the big-screen version played by Gal Gadot in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Wonder Woman was one of the few success stories of the DCEU, with the 2017 film starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins getting rave reviews and becoming a box office smash hit. Sadly, the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, disappointed critics and audiences, and in December 2022, Jenkins confirmed that newly appointed DCU heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had pulled the plug on Wonder Woman 3. Despite Gadot initially hinting she would return, all signs now point to the DCU looking to cast a new Wonder Woman.

‘Wonder Woman’ Is a Key Part of the DCU’s Future

Wonder Woman DC Comics

DC Comics

No word has been released on when Wonder Woman will hit theaters. DC Studios aims to release two films per year, so the earliest Wonder Woman could open is 2027, as DC Studios and Warner Bros. have no films scheduled for that year. Warner Bros. appears to be prioritizing Wonder Woman, meaning this film may receive some extra attention. However, James Gunn has already stated that no DC Studios movie will enter production without a finished screenplay that everyone is satisfied with, so it may be some time before a director or star is cast.

DC Studios appears to be building a slate of projects around the core members of the Trinity. Wonder Woman not only has a solo film, but also the HBO Max Paradise Lost prequel series in development, as well as Circe being a major part of the Creature Commandos. Superman will be followed up by Supergirl, while Peacemaker Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the recent DC smash hit. Batman will not only star in The Brave and the Bold, but Clayface will also be featured in a film based on one of his villains, with a version of Robin expected to lead the Teen Titans. With Nogueira having worked in the Superman and Batman corners of the franchise, she seems to be one of the guiding voices in the DCU.
