Meghalaya’s Model Wins National Praise: PM, FM Hail State as Blueprint for Self-Reliant India
Meghalaya has earned glowing praise from the country’s top leadership, with both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighting the state’s development model as an inspiring example of resilience and self-reliance.
The endorsements came in the wake of Sitharaman’s four-day visit to the state from July 10–13, during which she engaged with grassroots stakeholders and reviewed various central and state-supported initiatives, a statement said.

The Union Finance Minister, writing in a daily, lauded Meghalaya’s transformation, particularly its success in leveraging natural resources, empowering local communities, and aligning with the central government’s development vision. Her article emphasised the synergy between government support and community participation, calling it a model worthy of national replication.
“Throughout this journey, I was moved by the determination, optimism, and harmony with nature that define the people of Meghalaya. With government support and community spirit aligned, Meghalaya today offers a blueprint for a vibrant, confident, and self-reliant India. Till next time, Khublei Shibun and Mithela Meghalaya,” Sitharaman wrote, signing off with traditional local greetings.
Echoing her sentiments, Prime Minister Modi posted on social media platform X, saying:
“Union Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman highlights Meghalaya’s remarkable transformation driven by tourism, youth empowerment, women-led SHGs, initiatives like the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the Vibrant Village Programme, and more. With strong government support and vibrant community spirit, the state stands as a blueprint for a resilient and self-reliant India.”
At the heart of this recognition lies Meghalaya’s focus on community-driven tourism, the rise of women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and targeted youth empowerment initiatives. The implementation of national flagship schemes—such as the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the Vibrant Village Programme—has also contributed to improving rural infrastructure and access to sustainable energy, particularly in remote and border areas, the statement added.
