12 New States Proposed by Senate; Wrong Time, Wrong Step – New Nigeria Movers

WRONG TIME, WRONG STEP, WRONG ACTION

Sportsmen and women understand the importance of pain killer drugs. These are drugs that bring relief to hurt part of the body. Some of them, mostly give short-term relief to the affected area. However, if care is not taken the pain killer can result in adverse relapse worse than the beginning. Such is the case with the new Twelve (12) States approved by the Senate.

The society we are today is full of pain. Many of these pains have cut lives in their prime, and many others have become walking corpses as a result. The environment is so hostile that one finds it extremely difficult to trust one’s shadow. Yet the Senate has decided to approve additional new twelve (12) states. This is not the appropriate time to add new states to the existing. It is not at a time that Nigerians are crying, saying the cost of living and feeding is high, the cost of governance is high that the Senate should think of increasing the number of States. For what? Our economic growth and rate of development depends on good leadership and governance, brotherhood, time, location and attitudinal change, not the proliferation of States.

PEOPLES WELFARE FIRST

China with a population that runs above one billion people has 34 States. Also, India with the population above 1.5billion people is having 28 States and 8 administrative setting. Nigeria with a population a little above 200 million people is having thirty six (36) States, and yet the Senate has approved additional new Twelve (12) States. Our lawmakers ought to serve the country and not otherwise. Our heroes past are perfect example. They served the people with all their heart and natural affection.

SELF OR NATIONAL INTEREST?

Love builds up a nation. The best way to show that we love our nation and its progress is to stop corruption and corrupt practices, and by loving fellow Nigerians. What is our attitude to fellow Nigerians? What is the attitude of our senators to corruption and corrupt practices? Can one create additional new states in a corrupt environment like ours? The way to overcome corruption which has implication on new states creation is to stand against it by showing love and kindness to one another regardless of tribe or tongue.

When we love one another and our fatherland, it will be difficult for us to do things that hinder its rate of progress or serve as obstacles to fellow Nigerians. How will a leader steal or embezzle public funds that ought to be used to provide social amenities or develop the country? The Senate has not addressed that, yet you are creating states. Any law enacted that does not translate to loving our country and love for one another is no genuine law. True love is Nigeria first in all situations. Love for one another, and love for Nigeria first before creating new additional States.

FITNESS, NOT FAIRNESS

Finally, there is no doubt that we are currently plagued by poverty, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, economic recession, depression and inflation, tribalism, sectionalism, dichotomy, religious bigotry, sicknesses and diseases, etc. It is becoming increasingly difficult to discover one who is loyal and honest among ten Nigerians. This is the consequence of poverty, hunger, insecurity, poor diet, poor medical care and attention, poor living and working environment, tribal prejudice and discrimination, etc. When it comes to good diet, quantity of intake is not as important as the quality. Most junks people consume only succeed in making them fat but not fit for their body. Fatness atimes can be associated with unfitness.

Our lawmakers should be wary of things that make us exist just as a nation and people but not fit to move our country forward. Beyond politics, culture and religious sentiment, they need to address things that bring social gathering but result in corruption, insecurity, ethnic clashes, disputes and conflicts, poverty and hunger. If the economy must boom and Nigeria must rise again, we should stop the idea of additional states.

Our effective pain killer is Regional government and Twelve (12) States (1967-76) arrangement which the Senate should look into and work towards. They are the two effective pain killers and the soothe balms to relieve us totally and completely of these pains of ours. Thanks and God bless Nigeria.
