From Study Abroad to Study in India: British Universities to Set Up Campuses in Metro Cities

A dozen foreign universities, including five each from Australia and Britain, will set up campuses in India in the next few months. Seven universities have already received their LoI or Letter of Intent, while the applications of four have been approved. A fifth– the University of New South Wales, Australia, which aims to set up an India campus in Bangalore, is likely to get its LoI very soon.

The universities that have received their LOI are:

  • The University of Southampton, Britain, will have its campus in Gurugram, formerly known as Gurgaon. It received its LOI on August 29, last year–the first to do so.
  • The University of Liverpool, Britain, will have a Bangalore campus. The Human Resource Development Ministry issued the LOI in May this year.
  • Western Australian University will have two centers, at Mumbai and Chennai, both having been cleared on June 14.
  • The University of York, also British, will have a campus in Mumbai, with its go-ahead also coming on June 14.
  • The University of Aberdeen, Britain, will also be in Mumbai, having been cleared on June 14.
  • Only one American university–the Illinois Institute of Technology– had sought permission. The government accepted the application on June 14.
  • Also cleared that day was the application by the IED Istituto Europeo di Design, an Italian academic institution. The campus will be in Mumbai.

The government has cleared the bids of five universities. They are:

  • Victoria University, an Australian institution. It will open in Gurugram.
  • Western Sydney University. Also, Australian, it will be the only the second university have a campus in northern India. It will function out of Greater Noida. No foreign university is keen to set up an India campus in either eastern or north-eastern India so far.
  • La Trobe University of Australia will open in Bangalore
  • University of New South Wales, another Australian institution, will also be in Bangalore
  • The University of Bristol, a British academic body, is looking at Mumbai.

What these universities will do, sources said, will take pressure off Indian universities, particularly the Indian Institutes of Technology. The situation is so desperate that students who could not make it to the IITs in India are taking admission in the ones abroad– in Tanzania and Dubai.

Besides, there is an expectation that students would not go abroad, mainly to countries like Britain, Australia, and the United States, if there were opportunities in India. Much will depend on tuition fees, and there is a hope, sources said, that they will be somewhat lower. Even if they are going to be roughly equivalent to the amounts charged abroad, the cost of living will be much less. Of course, for many, a “foreign” education is also a lifestyle choice.

IIM-Ahmedabad to Open First Overseas Campus in Dubai

Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, will open its first overseas campus in Dubai, at the International Academic City on September 25. This is a major step for IIM-A, one of India’s leading institutions. There are already several leading business schools like London Business School, Manchester Business School, and EM Normandie Business School in Dubai.
