Field Hockey: No. 3 UVA falls at No. 11 Boston College in OT, 3-2 : Jerry Ratcliffe

The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season to Boston College, 3-2, in a tough battle on Friday at the Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Boston College (8-2, 3-0 ACC) found the back of the net first, scoring with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles wasted no time in the second quarter scoring what would be the team’s second of two goals in the first half of play.

Down at the half, Virginia (9-1, 3-1) responded in the third quarter as Daniela Mendez-Trendler netted one for the Cavaliers to cut the deficit in half.

In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Mendez-Trendler equaled the score with an assist from Taryn Tkachuk. Mendez-Trendler netted her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season to send the Cavaliers into overtime.

Two minutes into overtime, Boston College capitalized on the momentum as Madelieve Drion scored her second goal of the season to edge out the Cavaliers, 3-2.

With three shots on goal and two goals, Mendez-Trendler netted her third and fourth goals of the season
Virginia put up 10 shots and five corners to Boston College’s three shots and one corner
