Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah met with a senior World Bank (WB) delegation in Karachi on Friday, praising the bank’s strong partnership—particularly its role during the 2022 floods—and calling for accelerated support on ongoing projects across key sectors.
Led by WB Vice President for MENAAP, Ousmane Dione, the delegation reviewed progress on Sindh’s $4.01 billion active portfolio. The meeting covered urban development, flood recovery, water and sanitation, social protection, housing, and climate resilience efforts. Murad highlighted the bank’s critical contribution in post-flood housing, where 600,000 homes have already been built, with over 1.3 million bank accounts opened to support reconstruction.

The CM also pressed the bank to urgently appoint a procurement expert in Karachi to avoid delays in project execution. He flagged bottlenecks in multiple initiatives and pushed for faster approvals and additional financing—especially for the Karachi Urban Mobility Project, where over $170 million is needed to fully implement the plan.
Murad emphasized that climate-smart solutions were central to Sindh’s recovery, including AI-driven water and sanitation planning across six zones. He noted that tailored water strategies based on local conditions would serve over 48% of villages relying on groundwater and 38% near canal systems.
On the education front, the CM requested a one-year extension for the Sindh Early Learning (SELECT) project to allow for school infrastructure completion, and made a similar appeal for the social protection delivery project currently active in 14 districts.
The WB delegation welcomed Sindh’s commitment to reforms and transparency, and pledged continued support for fast-tracking implementation of development priorities.
The meeting followed a similar high-level discussion in Islamabad, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked the WB for its support post-floods and in defending Pakistan’s stance on the Indus Waters Treaty.
