Ministry: Athletes Suffer As Hockey Board Falls Short On Compliance

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs has expressed deep disappointment with the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board.

This follows the Senior Men’s and Women’s hockey teams’ late withdrawal from the 2025 Pan American Cups due to logistical issues.

In a media release, the Ministry said the National Hockey Board has been non-compliant in submitting audited financial statements on time and has not yet submitted statements for 2024.

A report from SporTT highlighted several breaches by the Hockey Board that contributed to the delay. It referred to the Board’s funding request on May 4th 2025, although both the women’s and men’s teams had qualified for the tournament in 2022 and 2024 respectively, and had been in preparation since January 2025.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Phillip Watts, expressing his disappointment with the situation, noted that when sport governing bodies fail to address financial and compliance matters such as these, it is the athletes who pay the ultimate price.
