Daniel Fear, coordinator of Fine Arts at Farmington Municipal Schools, has been selected for the New Mexico Music Educators Association’s Hall of Fame.

“This prestigious honor celebrates his outstanding dedication to music education, not only in Farmington Municipal Schools but across the entire state,” a FMS news release said.

Since 1988, the NMMEA has selected seven music educators in San Juan County into the Hall of Fame, including Les Leach, Janet Isham, Howard Chrisman and Barbara Mahan.

Virginia Nickels-Hircock, director of Caliente Community Chorus, was the last selection from San Juan County in 2019, according to the NMMEA list of winners.

The NMMEA requires nominees to be an active music educator or administrator in music education in the state for 20 or more years.

Fear will be entering 27 years with FMS, serving as coordinator since 2016, according to the district.

While under his leadership, Farmington schools have been named a NAMM Best Community for Music Education nine years in a row, and recognized three times as an NMMEA District of Distinction.

In 2022, Fear was named Art Administrator of the Year by the New Mexico Art Education Association.

In addition to his role at FMS, Fear stays actively involved in the music community, performing with several local and regional groups and serving as a clinician and adjudicator in New Mexico and Colorado, according to the district.

“I’m deeply honored and humbled to be recognized for my contributions to music education,” said Fear. “This work is my passion, and I gratefully share this award with the friends and colleagues who help make it so meaningful and rewarding. There is nothing more inspiring than witnessing the profound impact music education has on students and performers alike.”

The “Young Audience Concert” series encouraged fourth and fifth grade students to participate in music programs offered by FMS at the middle school level. (file photo)
