Malta reaffirms its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness presented Malta’s Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the United Nations (UN) High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York, the government said Sunday.
Malta progressed by 12 places in the UN Sustainable Development Report, now ranking 24th out of 167 countries. With a national score of 79.3% we are closing the gap with the highest-performing countries globally, including Finland at 87%.
Malta’s Second VNR outlines national progress, challenges, and future priorities in implementing the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report is underpinned by a robust framework of sustainable development indicators developed by the National Statistics Office. Developed through a whole-of-society approach, the VNR incorporates input from Ministries, entities, Local Councils, civil society, academics, the private sector and the general public. Young people were at the heart of the process, with a dedicated youth chapter developed to reflect their perspectives and contributions.
Francine Pace Caruana, Director for Sustainable Development within the Ministry, noted that the Maltese delegation actively engaged in a series of meetings that provided opportunities to showcase Malta’s efforts, exchange good practices, and discuss shared challenges in implementing the 2030 Agenda. These engagements reflect the international recognition of Malta’s ongoing efforts and the dedicated work in advancing sustainable development, highlighted Pace Caruana.
Malta also co-hosted together with OECD a side-event on innovative pathways to accelerate SDG progress, emphasising the importance of data-driven policy coherence and transboundary collaboration. In addition, Malta also co-organised a side event in partnership with the African Peer Review Mechanism and the OECD, focusing on policy coherence for sustainable ocean governance.
Malta’s presence at the High-Level Political Forum reflects its ongoing dedication to multilateralism and sustainable development, the government said. Malta reiterated the country’s commitment to leaving no one behind and to continue building resilient institutions and inclusive policies that support the SDGs.
