Steven Spielberg’s Criminally Underseen $260M Sci-Fi Film Comes to Peacock in August

Steven Spielberg is an award-winning director with many iconic films that changed the industry. However, as iconic as his films were, Spielberg has also been a part of many films from behind the scenes as a producer.

One of the films he produced was 2011’s Super 8. The sci-fi hit film has a magical team-up, as it features J.J. Abrams as writer and director, with Spielberg and Star Trek‘s Bryan Burk as producers. 14 years after its premiere, Super 8 is heading to Peacock on Aug. 1.

Steven Spielberg’s 1982 sci-fi fantasy film has inspired filmmakers and artists over the decades, and fans still love (and stream) it today.

Super 8 is about to receive more attention, as the film, despite its positive reception and commercial success, was on the underrated side. Aside from the upcoming release on Peacock, Super 8 will also head to Hulu on Aug. 1, as well. Before its upcoming release on Hulu and Peacock, the sci-fi film was only available to rent or purchase on digital platforms, so the availability on streaming will increase its popularity.

Super 8 has also attracted a lot of comparisons to Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Stranger Things, and its release on streaming platforms comes at the right time. Stranger Things is set to end with the upcoming fifth and final season, with a premiere on Thanksgiving, and set to air its finale on New Year’s Eve. Abrams’ sci-fi film premiered five years ahead of Stranger Things, but shares several similarities, including the period setting, a small town, a supernatural threat, and a group of kids trying to solve it.

Jurassic World Rebirth characters Isabella Delgado (Audrina Miranda), Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Teresa Delgado (Luna Blaise) and Xavier Dobbs (David Iacono)

The original Jurassic Park screenwriter revealed Steven Spielberg’s big no-no for the new entry.

The sci-fi film is set in a small town in Ohio in the late ’70s, and follows a group of teenagers who witness a mysterious train derailment while filming their movie. Lucky to have escaped unscathed, they realize that something dangerous was on the train.

Super 8 starred Joel Courtney (The Kissing Booth), Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Predator: Badlands), Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), as well as Lanterns actor Kyle Chandler and The Truman Show‘s Noah Emmerich.

Following its release, Super 8 had a positive reception. The movie has a Certified Fresh 81% approval from the critics, and 75% from the audience on the Popcornmeter. The film received several nods in the industry, including four Critics’ Choice Awards nominations.

With its dream creative team, Super 8 was also a strong box office hit. The sci-fi film was produced on a $50 million budget, and ended its run with over five times as much, grossing $257.9 million worldwide, and adding another $37 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales (via The Numbers).

Will Super 8 Ever Get a Sequel?

Hollywood often loves to continue any IP that is successful, but that doesn’t always happen. It’s been almost 15 years since Super 8 premiered, and there were never any plans for a sequel, although there was speculation about it. In an interview with Forbes to celebrate Super 8‘s 10th anniversary in 2021, J.J. Abrams turned down the idea of a sequel. “I don’t think so — that movie feels like a beginning, middle, and end to me,” the director revealed.

However, some stars would’ve loved to revisit their characters. “Before he [Abrams] finished his sentence, I would say, ‘Whatever you wanna do, I’m in.’ I would absolutely do that,” Courtney said. Griffiths added, “I think I’d be amazing to get the gang back together.” Several years later, that hasn’t happened, but more people can now discover the criminally underrated sci-fi film.

Super 8 will be available to stream on Peacock or Hulu on Aug. 1.
