DJ RoH ditches coaching career for music

After two years of studying to become a coach, DJ RoH decided that music was his calling.  The recording artiste, producer and disc jock relocated to the United States, where he embarked on a musical journey.

Having carved out a name for himself producing reggae, dancehall and gospel music, the Westmoreland native, who was born Rohan Oneil Higgins, recently released not one, but two rhythm projects.

Roots One was released on July 4. It features Why Oh Why by DJ RoH, Wash Off Bad Mind by Prodigal Son, Keep Moving On by Iesha Nova, Thanks by Shepherd Muzik, Overcome by QueSobah and Nothing Cyan Break Me by Strait E.

The other project is Blue Comet and so far, only two songs have been released, namely BallonDOR by Iesha Nova and his very own Paranoia.

DJ RoH previously produced projects such as Kandy Shock and Pypin rhythms.

“I’m bringing great energy, while maintaining the roots of the Caribbean/Jamaican culture, while fusing the culture with other genres and cultures for a broader reach. My productions are different because of the message and vibes, while keeping the roots,” said DJ RoH, who has so far worked with a number of acts including Iesha Nova, Prodigal Son, Zamunda, Specialist, Kashu, Hashez and Strait E.

Despite sharing that the journey has been a rough one, DJ RoH focuses on working with emerging and up and coming talent.  The move, he says, has been strategic.

“Despite the journey being rough, it has been rewarding because I put in lots of hard work and dedication, and I keep pushing through. Additionally, I work with a lot of newcomers, this has been my thrust to help to expose the talent that wouldn’t normally get these kinds of recording opportunities,” said DJ RoH.

A former student of Godfrey Stewart High, DJ RoH is also a trained music engineer, and he has developed a deep understanding of sound, rhythm and crowd energy. His evolution into a music production and as a recording artist has made him a respected figure in many musical circles.
