The Richest And The Poorest States Of India Revealed By NSO

According to a FE report, the minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, confirmed in a written response in the lok sabha that, according to preliminary data released by the National Statistical office (NSO), goa had the highest per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) in india for FY 2023–24 at Rs 3.57 lakh, while bihar came in last with only Rs 32,227.

“The per capita net national income at constant prices for 2024-25 stands at Rs 1,14,710,” Chaudhary said in response to a parliamentary question from MPs Giridhari Yadav and Dinesh Chandra Yadav. This represents a notable increase from Rs 72,805 in 2014-15. But the numbers also highlight stark regional differences in income growth. As the minister went on to say, “The increase in per capita income varies across States and UTs,” pointing out that economic disparities are caused by “varying levels of economic development, sectoral composition, structural disparities, and governance mechanisms.”

Top Five States/UTs by Per Capita Income (FY24):

Goa – Rs 3,57,611
Sikkim – Rs 2,92,339
Delhi – Rs 2,71,490
Chandigarh – Rs 2,56,912
Puducherry – Rs 1,45,921

Bottom Three States by Per Capita Income (FY24):

Bihar – Rs 32,227
Uttar Pradesh – Rs 50,341
Jharkhand – Rs 65,062

The report highlights that while states like karnataka (Rs 1.91 lakh), tamil Nadu (Rs 1.79 lakh), and telangana (Rs 1.77 lakh) have seen robust economic performance, large swathes of the east and central regions continue to lag significantly.

The data is seen by experts as a warning to policymakers.  One senior economist responded to the statistics by saying, “Resolving such regional imbalances will be critical for long-term inclusive growth.”

With Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas as its guiding ideology, the Finance Ministry emphasized that the government is still “committed to inclusive development” and hinted that focused economic planning might be on the horizon.
